Livermore Valley, California, is being recognized as Wine Enthusiast’s 2026 American Wine Region of the Year. But what makes this year different from any other?
The Livermore Valley has always been one of the hallmark regions for grape-growing and winemaking in Northern California. In addition to winning the Grand Prize at the Paris Exposition in 1889, it’s responsible for one of the most phenomenal clonal selections of all time: the Wente Clone, which is used to make Chardonnay all over the world.
Known for signature expressions of Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc, long-standing, multi-generational wineries (like Wente Family Vineyards and Concannon Vineyard) have continued to propel the region forward, while small family operations are experimenting with lesser-used varietals, like Torrontés and Timorasso.
The Livermore Valley Wine Community has been run by Executive Director Brandi Lombardi for 19 years, and is the headquarters of the nearly two-year-old Global Artisan Vintners Alliance. The Global AVA is comprised of 12 wine regions around the world, including Livermore, and focuses on creating a “thriving and inclusive global wine economy that strengthens locally owned and operated wineries and fosters enhanced agritourism in lesser-known wine regions.”
In addition to tech-fueled population growth in the region, there has been a recent explosion of thoughtful wine events, including TASTE: The Livermore Valley Wine Experience, Terroir at the Table, and Cab Franc-A-Palooza.
The region also has one of the highest percentages of women winemakers in the United States. The region’s mission has always reflected the Livermore Valley Wine Community’s tagline: “Wine tasting as it should be.” Home to more than 50 wineries, the region is a community that is resurrecting true wine hospitality.
The next time you are in Livermore Valley, I suggest driving on Tesla Road to the highest point, in the middle of the valley. Step out of your car and look out at the vast expanse of the vineyard land, olive trees, and small estates. Smell the sea breeze and take in the 360-degree view. Come frolic in Livermore Valley, where everyone knows your name. The best is yet to come, and we are here for it.
