Year eight was a good one for the Florida Phoenix.
The Florida Society of News Editors recognized the Phoenix’s coverage of health care programs for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Third-generation reporter Liv Caputo joined the Phoenix staff in September and wasted no time digging into how the DeSantis administration spent hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars at “Alligator Alcatraz.”
The Phoenix was the only Florida news organization with statewide coverage of the No Kings Day rallies, with our reporters stationed at demonstrations from Miami to Tampa to Sopchoppy to Pensacola.
Our in-depth coverage of the dysfunctional 2026 regular session and the three subsequent special sessions was second to none.
And when it comes to the best, Phoenix columnists Craig Pittman and Diane Roberts are, we’d argue, the GOATs, offering insights on the workings of state government like only a native could (Pittman was born in Pensacola and Roberts, an eighth generation Floridian, in Tallahassee). Barrington Salmon, meanwhile, although not a native Floridian, writes with clear insight about racial politics.
Our enthusiasm as we enter year nine has not waned.
