Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) claimed Thursday that he saw shoppers at Best Buy on the verge of tears over Texas turning blue in the midterm elections.
Many observers didn’t buy his story.
“I’ve just encountered people who are grieving,” Cruz told Sean Hannity on Fox News. “They’re in shock. They may have been angry but they did not anticipate this tidal wave nationwide electing radicals to the Senate, giving the Democrats a stranglehold on the Senate and Texas flipping blue. I went to Best Buy this afternoon, I walked in and three people there were almost in tears expressing shock. What has happened to our state?”
What happened was: Texas turned over a U.S. Senate seat and governorship to Democrats ― James Talarico and Gina Hinojosa, respectively ― for the first time in decades. And there were significant Democratic victories further down the ballot.
Whether Cruz’s Best Buy encounter actually happened got some fierce and funny pushback on social media.
“Hey Ted, were those 3 people named ‘Me, myself, and I’?” one person asked.
“Did they say ‘Sir’, too?” another wrote, referring to President Donald Trump’s penchant for including “sir” in dubious stories.
