Triathletes, pack your bags: we’re heading to Tennessee. The Ironman Group announced today that Chattanooga has been selected as the host city for the 2027 70.3 World Championship triathlon on August 28 and 29, 2027.
The selection of the “Scenic City” is part of a refreshed five-year commitment aimed at cementing Chattanooga’s status within the global Ironman 70.3 Worlds circuit. The race has been a perennial favorite for North American triathletes since the inaugural Ironman 70.3 Chattanooga on May 17, 2015, thanks to a fast, current-assisted 1.2-mile swim in the Tennessee River and an acclaimed host city atmosphere.
“Chattanooga has already demonstrated its ability to deliver an exceptional Ironman 70.3 World Championship experience,” said Diana Bertsch, Ironman’s managing director for North America and world championship events. “From its stunningly scenic courses to the overwhelming community engagement, we are thrilled to return in 2027 and once again showcase this iconic destination to a global audience.”
Chattanooga is no stranger to the 70.3 world championship, having hosted the event in 2017. That year was the first time the championship was split into two days – one for men, and one for women. This factored into the decision to return 10 years later, as Ironman says the success of the event “solidified Chattanooga’s reputation as a world-class host capable of delivering at the highest level.”
In 2027, Ironman expects to welcome 7,000 triathletes to Chattanooga via over 120 qualifying events worldwide, a 55% jump from the last time the city hosted the 70.3 World Championship race. The qualifying cycle for the 2027 world championship will begin soon, on July 5, 2026, with Ironman 70.3 Jonköping European Championship, Ironman 70.3 Les Sables d’Olonne-Vendée, and Ironman 70.3 Muskoka all taking place on that weekend.
Ironman 70.3 World Championship history

Unlike the full-distance Ironman World Championship, which has a distinct spiritual home in Hawaii (having originated on the island of Oahu and moved to Kona in 1981), the 70.3 World Championship has evolved into a true global phenomenon.
The inaugural Ironman 70.3 World Championship took place on November 11, 2006, in Clearwater, Florida (approximately 20 miles away from Ironman’s headquarters in Tampa). After five years in pancake-flat Clearwater (2006 to 2010), Ironman decided to relocate the event to Nevada, with Lake Las Vegas and Henderson, Nevada, sharing the hosting responsibilities for the early September race. Athletes relished the tougher course and earlier date, but the event still struggled to match the hype of the big Kona race in October.
That’s when Ironman realized they didn’t have to give 70.3 worlds a home – the whole world could host the race. As Bertsch told Triathlete in 2024, the organization realized a fixed location didn’t resonate with their goals for the race: “It wasn’t about creating a mini-Kona. It was about giving 70.3 worlds its own personality – a way to test athletes differently, year after year.”
Since 2014, when it departed Nevada, the race has moved to a new city each year, beginning with Mont-Tremblant in Quebec, Canada. The success of the experiment inspired Ironman to use 70.3 worlds as a proving ground for other ideas: At Chattanooga in 2017, the race split into two days, with 1,500 women (professionals and age-groupers) competing on the first day and 2,700 men (professionals and age-groupers) on the second. The split allowed Ironman to address issues of fairness in the women’s race, which had been affected by slower professional men and fast age-group men and chronically plagued world championship events, making for a chaotic (and draft-filled) competition.
“For years, athletes had been asking for it,” Bertsch said. “The two-day format wouldn’t just improve fairness – it would allow us to accommodate more competitors.”
And accommodate more competitors it did: From its inaugural year, when 1,800 competitors toed the line, the Ironman 70.3 World Championship has ballooned into one of the most popular events in the brand’s profile, with over 6,300 athletes competing in Marbella in 2025.
